Free Things To Do In and Around Custer

Custer, South Dakota boasts some amazing views, historic locations, and destinations for the whole family. These free things to do will keep you and your family entertained without breaking the bank.



  • Walk the Mickelson Trail-within Custer city limits

  • Hike Big Rock Park and view beautiful downtown Custer and surrounding areas from the overlook

  • Take pictures (or selfies!) of the painted buffalo downtown-Pick up a map at the Visitor Information Center so you can find them all!

  • Play, relax, read, etc at Harbach Park and French Creek Park

  • Take pictures of the caboose at Harbach Park, the Flick Cabin, Kleeman House, 1881 Bank Coffee House, and stone jail in front of YMCA

  • Borrow frisbees from the Custer Chamber Visitor Information Center and play frisbee golf at Big Rock Park

  • Drive through Wind Cave National Park and look for our national mammal, the bison
