Custer is the perfect combination of small-town charm and outdoor adventure.  It will bring out your inner wanderer and reconnect you with the outdoors.  After hitting up the local lakes, checking out the endless hiking and biking trails, or exploring our national and state parks; nothing beats a refreshing beverage of any variety.  Keep reading for exceptional places to grab a drink in Custer!

Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company
In your inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness, you have finally found a full-flavored, sessionable beer built through dedicated craft on balance and drinkability. Located right off of the Mickelson Trail on Mt. Rushmore Road you’ll find not only great beer but a full-service bar and an award-winning restaurant upstairs. The Pounding Fathers Restaurant features some of South Dakota’s favorite breweries along with your favorite big domestics.

Sip on this: Buffalo Snot is a session drinker designed to drink like an Irish Stout but pack a slightly bolder flavor profile.  Or order a flight and try several of their locally crafted brews!

The Custer Wolf Food & Drink
The Custer Wolf is a gastropub serving from scratch comfort food, craft beer and wine.  Head over to relax and enjoy eight rotating beers on tap in their laid-back environment.  The Custer Wolf is a favorite for locals and tourists looking for something a little different.

Gold Pan Saloon
The meeting place for Custer locals and those visiting the Black Hills area since 1876.  The Gold Pan Saloon has a full line of liquor, beer, and wine.  Enjoy your favorite brew and take in the simplicity of the Oldest Saloon in the Black Hills area.

Sip on this: Try a Fools Gold brewed by Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company or SoDak IPA from Lost Cabin Beer Company brewed in Rapid City.

Denial South Dakota
Denial South Dakota is a tasting room offering beer & wine tastings and meat & cheese platters with local favorites.  Tammi prepares a daily soup and sandwich option or you can just have a drink on the patio if you prefer. 

Sip on this: Local Beer on Tap - try their 24 oz flights. 6 ounce each - choose four of their local rotating beer taps and some meat n cheese on the patio

Begging Burro Mexican Bistro & Tequila Bar
The Begging Burro is a Mexican Bistro that is an unexpected treat downtown. Their menu is created by some of the best chefs South of the Border. Offering classics like Street Tacos and Yucatan Kebbes, as well as dishes like Tequila Shrimp and Scallops or Halibut Tikin Xic. Handcrafted cocktails prepared with love and freshly squeezed ingredients complement their extensive Mezcal and Tequila selection.

AJ’s Ore Car Saloon
AJ's has been in the same family since 1982.  Recently has been updated, but still has the same "Cheers" feel.  The motto is "where friends meet," so head in and enjoy the coldest beer around!

Sip on this: Enjoy a cold beer in one of the oldest buildings in town.

The Custer Beacon
The Custer Beacon is a live music venue, restaurant, bar and community events space.  Fresh, made-to-order food from The Canteen menu is available lunch, dinner and late night both indoors and on the patio.  The bistro lounge setting is a great hangout space for all ages to enjoy tasty food and live music in an indoor-outdoor setting.

Sip on this: Try a local craft beer and then stay for some great entertainment.

Buglin’ Bull Restaurant & Sports Bar
Family-friendly restaurant featuring “The Best Buffalo Burgers in the Black Hills” and South Dakota wild game including buffalo, elk, pheasant, trout and walleye. Prime rib, steaks, salads, wraps, pasta & pizza available as well as a full bar with excellent microbrews and wines. 

Sip on this: They have 4 Buglin’ Bull Beers: Wapiti Wheat, 1874 Black Hills Gold, Armstrong Ale, and Elk Poop Oatmeal Stout.  Order one or try all four in a sampler of 5oz each with the Buglin’ Bull Beer Flight.



Rocky Knolls Golf Course
The 9-hole, par 36 Rocky Knolls Golf Course offers 3,084 yards of precision golf from the longest tee. Hungry? Thirsty?  There is a wide selection of food to order from the grill for both lunch and dinner and a full-service bar.

VFW Post 3442
The purpose of the VFW is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts.  However, VFW Post 3442 in downtown Custer is open to the public.  They have a full bar and limited food.

Sip on this: Enjoy your favorite beer or mixed drink in their laid-back atmosphere.

*Prairie Berry Winery & Miner Brewing Company
Prairie Berry wine is hand crafted on-site in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.  Their wines have won more than 1,000 international awards.  Plan ahead and reserve your free wine tasting of up to five tastes.  Bring your whole family for lunch on their patio and games on their lawn.  Visit Miner Brewing Co next door for South Dakota inspired craft beer, meads, ciders, and seltzers. 

*Prairie Berry Winer & Miner Brewing Company are not located in Custer, but are three miles north east of Hill City on Hwy 385. 

Sip on this: At Prairie Berry Winery, try their most famous wine, Red Ass Rhubarb.  At Miner Brewing Company, try the Chokecherry Brown Ale.  It was named the best beer in South Dakota by the American Homebrewers Association.



Skogen Kitchen and Sage Creek Grille both have extensive wine lists along with impressive beer lists.  You won't have a difficult time finding something that pairs well with your meal!

Bakers Bakery & Café, Black Hills Burger & Bun, Laughing Water Restaurant at Crazy Horse Memorial, Pizza Mill, and Pizza Works all have adult beverage options available to enjoy with your meal.  Check the menu or ask your server what's available.

Calamity Jane’s Coffee Shop & Grill and Wicked Espresso are both coffee shops that have wine in addition to all of their coffee choices!

Luckily, there are plenty of places to grab a delightful drink in Custer. Wherever you choose to say “cheers”, you’re bound to have a good time!
