Easy Rider Motorcycle Travel ItineraryOne of the best ways to enjoy Custer and the Black Hills is with a scenic motorcycle ride. Morning:Start the morning off with a drive along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park. Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Antelope, Elk are all permanent residents of the park and can generally be seen from the roadway. Mornings are a great time to spot the wildlife since they tend to be more active. Mid-Morning:Stay in Custer State Park and head toward Needles Highway (SD Highway 87). This 14-mile ride winds through granite spires and narrow rock tunnels. The Needles are a defining landmark of Black Hills geology. Keep following Needles Highway to Iron Mountain Road where you will travel along pigtail bridges and through three rock tunnels, all with views of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Afternoon:Head north on the toward the town of Sturgis—home to one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world. Sturgis Bike week occurs every August and attracts thousands of bikers. Late Afternoon/Evening:After touring Sturgis head to Spearfish Canyon. Spearfish Canyon State and National Forest Service Scenic Byway (US 14A) takes you through the canyon-filled limestone cliffs, gushing waterfalls and dozens of awe-inspiring views. |
