Shared Vision Tour of the Lakota Music Project

Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer

The Lakota Music Project - musicians and staff from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra joined with Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota partners - launched its nationally recognized Lakota Music Project (LMP) to create a shared musical experience, demonstrating cooperation and friendship between Native and non-Native peoples. To date, over 10,000 people have experienced LMP performances across the state.

Through the music of Lakota, Dakota and western classical traditions, the concert program themes are common human experiences of love, celebration, humor, and youth. The cornerstones of the tour are world premieres of two works – the first by composer Derek Bermel in collaboration with Creekside Singers drum keeper Emmanuel Black Bear, and the second, by composer Jeffrey Paul in collaboration with Dakota cedar flutist Bryan Akipa. These new pieces were created through a robust two-year collaborative process and represent a harmonious combination of unique musical traditions. Also throughout the tour, new works are introduced from students of the SDSO’s Music Composition Academy, which serves young people from tribal communities in the state.

The Shared Vision Tour begins on Native Americans' Day at Crazy Horse Memorial® before traveling across the state to communities in or nearby the Pine Ridge, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Rosebud, and Yankton Sioux Reservations, culminating with a performance in Sioux Falls.

The group will have two performances at Crazy Horse Memorial® on Monday, October 13 at 10:30-1130AM and also 1:00-2:30PM.
