The Southern Hills Family Resource Fair

Families with children ages 0–8 are invited to a free event featuring over 40 interactive booths, free Pizza Mill pizza, and essential childhood resources.

This year’s fair, supported by a grant from the United Way of the Black Hills, aims to provide a "one-stop shop" for parents while offering an unforgettable morning for kids. Highlights of the event include:

Hands-On Play: A Strider Bike course, bouncy houses, and a "Touch-a-Truck" experience featuring the Custer Volunteer Fire Department, Custer Ambulance Service, and Custer Search and Rescue.

Regional Icons: Educational activities hosted by The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Custer State Park.

Family Lunch: A free pizza lunch provided by Custer’s own Pizza Mill (including gluten-free options).

Developmental Milestones: Parents can connect directly with experts from Monument Health Custer, Birth to Three, and the Custer School District Therapy Department to ask questions about screenings and school readiness.

“Our goal is to make sure every family in our area feels supported and connected,” says Nora Smolnisky, event coordinator. “By bringing healthcare providers, educators, and local organizations like Black Hills Parks & Forests and the Custer County Library under one roof, we’re making it easy—and fun—for parents to find the resources their children need to thrive.”

The event is entirely free to the public. In addition to the activities, families can browse local preschool and childcare options, including Growing Roots, Willow Creek Child Care, and the Custer YMCA Child Development Center. Numerous door prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the morning.
