The Black Hills of South Dakota have hundreds of beautiful hiking trails for people of any fitness level, ranging from easy to strenuous. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of the forest while making memories and experiencing a different aspect of Custer State Park by participating in the 2025 Summer Trail Challenge.
The "2025 Summer Trail Challenge" which has officially started today, May 1, 2025, will end on September 5, 2025. Along each of the 8 trails, a bronze medallion can be found near a post with a Trail Challenge sign. To complete the Trail Challenge, participants must hike all the listed trails and collect a rubbing of each of the Trail Challenge medallions on the official form. The official forms can be picked up at any of the Custer State Park Visitor Centers or the Park Office (Note: an official form must be used). Once all rubbings have been collected, participants can turn the completed forms in at the Custer State Park Visitor Center to receive a Custer State Park Trail Challenge Pin. All completed forms must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 9, 2025.

Little Devils Tower Trail
Prairie Trail
The Lost Trails
Stockade Lake Trail
Centennial Trail (north of Highland Creek)
