Member Spotlight: Hjem A.M.

This week we’re shining the spotlight on one of Custer’s beloved breakfast destinations — Hjem A.M.

Hjem A.M. opened its doors on April 13, 2022, bringing a warm, welcoming breakfast experience to our community. The name “Hjem” means “home” in Danish, and that feeling is exactly what owners Erik Hjortnaes and Camillia set out to create.

Executive Chef Erik Hjortnaes came to the Black Hills from California, while Camillia, known for her friendly smiles and heartwarming hugs, hails from Minnesota. The two quickly fell in love with the beauty of the Black Hills and the incredible community in Custer. Before long, Custer became a special place in their hearts — and they made it their home.

“We wanted to bring good food and a comforting environment into our restaurant. We wanted everyone to feel at home.”

At Hjem A.M., guests can enjoy sensational breakfast entrées, delicious appetizers, and exceptional service that keeps locals and visitors coming back again and again. If you’re looking for a culinary adventure served with a welcoming smile, they’ll gladly save you a table.

Exciting News!

Hjem A.M. has also been named a semifinalist and is officially in consideration for an award at the 2026 James Beard Awards—one of the most prestigious honors in the restaurant industry!

The James Beard Awards recognize excellence across the culinary world, including Restaurant and Chef Awards, Media Awards, and Achievement Awards. Hjem A.M. earned its nomination in the Best Chef: Midwest category, representing Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin—an incredible accomplishment and a point of pride for our entire community!

Next time you’re in town, stop by Hjem A.M., enjoy an unforgettable breakfast, and experience the hospitality that truly makes you feel at home.
